The Gospel Story

1 / 18 · Full story

Are we more than what we produce?

The Bible introduces people as made in God’s image. Our worth does not depend on performance, productivity, or approval. We are invited to love God and our neighbors and care for the world.

In Genesis 1, God calls the world he has made good and entrusts people with its care. God’s image is not a title reserved for exceptional people. Those who need help and those who struggle to see their own worth have dignity too. This story begins with the giver of life, rather than a list of achievements we must complete to deserve love.

What might change if we saw dignity before achievement?

Genesis 1:26–31

What might change if we saw dignity before achievement?

02

What has gone wrong?

We long for love, yet we hurt one another. In the Bible, sin is more than a collection of mistakes: it involves turning from God and making ourselves the center. That rupture affects our relationships with ourselves, others, and the world.

God

Distrust can replace a relationship of trust.

Ourselves

Shame can lead us to hide instead of seek help.

Neighbors

Blame can replace listening and responsibility.

The world

Using what is entrusted to us can replace caring for it.

Explore this further

In Genesis 3, people distrust God, hide, and shift blame. Romans says none of us can boast of being righteous on our own. This does not mean victims are responsible for the wrong done to them. Illness, disability, and abuse must not be treated as proof of personal punishment. Acknowledging sin calls us to face our own responsibility, not find new reasons to blame others.

Read Scripture · Genesis 3:1–13 / Romans 3:23

Original Korean Scripture: Korean Revised Version (KRV). The explanations above are editorial prose, not an English Bible translation.

Genesis 3:1–13

When facing a wrong, what do I hide or whom do I blame?

03

Why does sin matter so much?

Evil harms real people and relationships. God does not dismiss it as if nothing happened. Sin raises questions of responsibility, judgment, separation from God, and death.

Explore this further

Romans 2 places stubbornness and wrongdoing before God’s just judgment. Longing for justice includes wanting victims’ tears to matter. Yet we cannot exempt ourselves from accountability. Romans 6:23 sets the death that sin brings alongside God’s gift of life in Christ. Judgment is not a device for frightening people into a decision; it helps explain the seriousness of our need for rescue.

Read Scripture · Romans 6:23 / Romans 2:5–8

Original Korean Scripture: Korean Revised Version (KRV). The explanations above are editorial prose, not an English Bible translation.

Romans 6:23

How can we take both accountability and forgiveness seriously?

04

Can trying harder save us?

Making amends and helping our neighbors matter. But good deeds cannot erase sin or purchase peace with God. Salvation is a gift of grace, and a life of goodness grows from that grace.

Ephesians 2:8–10 connects grace, faith, and good works while keeping their order clear. We do not demand salvation on the strength of our record. God makes us new in Christ for a life of good works. Helping others and repairing harm are not worthless. They are important responses to love, rather than the price of being saved.

Read Scripture · Ephesians 2:8–10

Original Korean Scripture: Korean Revised Version (KRV). The explanations above are editorial prose, not an English Bible translation.

Ephesians 2:8–10

Am I always trying to prove that I deserve love?

ACT 02

What is the gospel?

05

Did God abandon humanity?

The biblical story does not end with human failure. God calls Abraham and carries his promises through Israel’s history. Those promises hold out blessing and hope for the nations.

Explore this further

Abraham’s call in Genesis 12 is not merely a story of personal success; it concerns the families of the earth. Israel’s story includes deliverance, covenant, failure, and longing for restoration. Isaiah 53 describes a servant who bears the wrongs and suffering of others. Christians read this unfolding hope in light of Jesus, rather than treating the Old Testament as a collection of secret codes.

Read Scripture · Genesis 12:1–3 / Isaiah 53:4–6

Original Korean Scripture: Korean Revised Version (KRV). The explanations above are editorial prose, not an English Bible translation.

Genesis 12:1–3

What hope might a promise that outlasts human failure offer?

06

Who is Jesus?

Jesus is presented as more than a teacher of good advice. John says the Word, who is God, became human and lived among us. Jesus announced God’s kingdom and invited people to repent and believe.

Explore this further

God’s kingdom is not simply a place to go after death. It concerns God’s reign and restoring work. Jesus’ teaching and care for people reveal that reign. He did not merely send instructions from a distance; he entered human life. Reading John’s account of the incarnation alongside Mark’s announcement of the kingdom helps us understand who it is who goes to the cross.

Read Scripture · John 1:1–14 / Mark 1:14–15

Original Korean Scripture: Korean Revised Version (KRV). The explanations above are editorial prose, not an English Bible translation.

John 1:1–14

Could I explore who Jesus is by reading a Gospel for myself?

07

What happened at the cross?

Jesus died to bear our sins and bring us to God. The cross reveals both God’s love and the seriousness of sin. This love was not a reward for making ourselves worthy first.

Explore this further

Romans 5 says Christ died for us while we were still sinners. First Peter describes the righteous one suffering for the unrighteous to bring us to God. This is not a conflict between a hateful Father and a loving Son. God shows his love in Christ, and Jesus gives himself. Forgiveness does not trivialize evil; reconciliation opens through Christ’s sacrifice.

Read Scripture · Romans 5:6–8 / 1 Peter 3:18

Original Korean Scripture: Korean Revised Version (KRV). The explanations above are editorial prose, not an English Bible translation.

Romans 5:6–8

How do I respond to love given before I could prove myself worthy?

08

Why is the resurrection essential?

The gospel does not stop at Jesus’ death. The apostles proclaimed that he actually rose from the dead. His resurrection is victory over death and the ground of resurrection hope for those in Christ.

Explore this further

First Corinthians 15 recounts Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection, and appearances. Paul presents the resurrection as a witnessed event, not merely a symbol of emotional recovery. Calling Christ the firstfruits, he connects it to the resurrection still to come. This passage is an important early witness to the Christian claim. It need not silence questions: the Gospels and this testimony can be read and examined carefully.

Read Scripture · 1 Corinthians 15:3–8 / 1 Corinthians 15:20–22

Original Korean Scripture: Korean Revised Version (KRV). The explanations above are editorial prose, not an English Bible translation.

1 Corinthians 15:3–8

How might hope beyond death change the way we live today?

09

So what is the gospel?

The gospel is good news about who Jesus is and what he has done for us. God’s Son came, died for sins, and rose again. Through faith in the living Lord, we receive peace with God by grace.

He cameThe crossResurrectionJesus is Lord
Good news about what Jesus has done, calling us to trust him.
Explore this further

This is more than a technique for positive thinking or a moral lesson. At its center are Jesus’ coming, cross, and resurrection, rather than our achievements. Romans 10 speaks of confessing him as Lord and believing that God raised him. Calling him Lord involves entrusting the direction of our lives to him. The gospel calls for a response, while its saving foundation remains Christ.

Read Scripture · 1 Corinthians 15:1–4 / Romans 10:9

Original Korean Scripture: Korean Revised Version (KRV). The explanations above are editorial prose, not an English Bible translation.

1 Corinthians 15:1–4

How would I distinguish good news about Jesus from advice to try harder?

ACT 03

How do we respond, and what changes?

10

How do we receive grace?

Salvation is not a reward for proving our qualifications. We receive God’s grace in Christ through faith. Faith is reliance on Jesus, not another achievement to boast about.

Explore this further

The picture of receiving a gift helps us understand that grace is not purchased. But a relationship with God is more than receiving an object. John 1 says those who receive Christ and believe in his name are given the right to become God’s children. God is the one who loves and gives life first. Faith is not a bargain that forces God to act; it is trust in him and his rescue.

Read Scripture · Ephesians 2:8–9 / John 1:12

Original Korean Scripture: Korean Revised Version (KRV). The explanations above are editorial prose, not an English Bible translation.

Ephesians 2:8–9

Can I receive help without first proving that I deserve it?

11

What are repentance and faith?

Repentance goes beyond feeling bad about being caught: it means acknowledging sin and turning to God. Faith means trusting Jesus and his saving work. We do not have to repair ourselves perfectly before coming to him.

Explore this further

Guilt can alert us to wrong, but it can also trap us in isolation. Repentance brings what we have hidden before God and turns toward a new direction. Where we have harmed others, responsible apology and repair matter, without becoming a payment for forgiveness. Mark and Acts hold repentance toward God and faith in Jesus together. Learning and seeking help belong within that response.

Read Scripture · Mark 1:15 / Acts 20:21

Original Korean Scripture: Korean Revised Version (KRV). The explanations above are editorial prose, not an English Bible translation.

Mark 1:15

What might I need to acknowledge honestly and seek help with?

12

What changes in our relationship with God?

Scripture speaks of forgiveness, peace, and adoption for those who trust Christ. Justification means being accepted as righteous before God through Christ, rather than on the strength of our achievements. The Holy Spirit accompanies this new life.

Explore this further

Romans 5 links justification by faith with peace with God. Romans 8 contrasts fearful slavery with calling on God as his children. Ephesians 1 describes the Spirit as the guarantee of our inheritance. Acceptance in court, a family table, and companionship each illuminate a different aspect; no single picture explains everything. These gifts are not a promise of immediate comfort in every circumstance.

Read Scripture · Romans 5:1 / Romans 8:15–16 / Ephesians 1:13–14

Romans 5:1

What might it mean to call on God as Father rather than only fear him?

13

What if I want to believe but feel unsure?

Feelings can change from day to day. Salvation is not grounded in a strong emotion or a particular prayer formula. Scripture directs us to Christ and God’s promise.

Explore this further

John 5:24 promises life to those who hear Jesus’ word and believe the one who sent him. First John locates life in God’s Son and says it was written so believers may know. You do not need to pretend to certainty while questions remain. You can keep learning about Jesus and read with someone trustworthy. Prayer is a way to speak honestly to God, not a spell that secures salvation.

Read Scripture · John 5:24 / 1 John 5:11–13

Original Korean Scripture: Korean Revised Version (KRV). The explanations above are editorial prose, not an English Bible translation.

John 5:24

What question would I like to explore further?

An optional prayer

Prayer is not a formula. You can speak honestly to God in your own words.

God, I acknowledge my sin and my need for your mercy. I believe Jesus died for sins and rose again. Please forgive me, and teach me to trust him and follow him. Help me to live in your grace. Amen.

How does the gospel reshape life?

14

What does new life change?

In Christ we receive a new identity and direction. That does not mean every emotional difficulty or practical problem disappears at once. Change involves learning and growing in grace.

The new creation in 2 Corinthians 5:17 concerns the new reality of belonging to Christ; the surrounding passage speaks of reconciliation with God. Ephesians 2:10 points toward good works. Small choices—admitting a mistake or listening to a neighbor’s need—can express that direction. Seeking help and repenting after a failure are part of growth too. This is not a race in which people are ranked by speed.

Which small choice today could express a new direction?

15

What does the fruit of the Spirit look like?

The Spirit grows fruit such as love, joy, and peace in our lives. These are not scores for assigning a faith grade. They take shape as we depend on God in family life, work, and relationships.

Galatians 5 contrasts life driven by self-centered desires with life led by the Spirit. Patience does not require enduring abuse without help, and gentleness does not mean ignoring evil. Listening carefully, pausing before an angry response, and speaking truthfully can become places of growth. We seek the Spirit’s help and practice in community; we do not complete a perfect checklist to prove salvation.

Where could I practice love or self-control in a relationship today?

16

Is faith a solitary journey?

Faith leads into shared learning, prayer, and care. Worship and everyday life, the table and the workplace, belong together. Community and Scripture reflection help us grow in grace.

Acts 2 describes a community that learns, shares meals, and cares for needs. Hebrews encourages mutual support in love and good works; Romans 12 speaks of offering our lives to God. A healthy community allows questions, protects vulnerable people, and holds leaders accountable. Membership in a particular church or service is not a condition of salvation. 삼시세끼 묵상 can be one Korean-language aid for reflecting on Scripture through the day.

Who could I speak with honestly about questions and weaknesses?

Does suffering remain when we believe?

Faith is not a promise of exemption from suffering. Scripture speaks of the Spirit’s help and Christ’s love in a world that groans. We can acknowledge pain and seek the care and help we need.

Romans 8:18–39 includes waiting, groaning, and weakness. Verse 28 does not promise that every event quickly becomes success. It belongs with verse 29’s purpose of becoming like Christ and with the love from which nothing can separate his people. Illness, depression, or victimization should not be labeled a lack of faith. Prayer is compatible with treatment, protection, and practical help. Hope does not deny pain; it says suffering need not be faced alone.

Romans 8:18–39

Whom could I ask for the care or practical help I need?

Where is the story heading?

The gospel’s final hope is not escape into nothingness. Scripture speaks of bodily resurrection and a heaven and earth made new by God. We look toward life with God, where death and tears do not have the final word.

First Corinthians 15 speaks of the perishable body raised imperishable. Revelation 21 depicts God dwelling with people and wiping away their tears in the new creation. We cannot fill in every detail in advance. The heart of this hope is God’s promise to end death and evil and bring restoration. It gives us a reason to love our neighbors and care for the world today, rather than neglect them.

1 Corinthians 15:42–57

What act of love could I begin today in light of this hope?

Questions are welcome

Is being good enough?

Wanting to do good matters. Ephesians 2:8–10 does not discard good works: it describes salvation as grace and good works as its result. Making amends matters, while forgiveness from God is received rather than earned.

Why Jesus?

It helps to begin with who Jesus is, rather than a desire to exclude people. John 1:1–14 and 1 Peter 3:18 present him as God come among us and the one who brings sinners to God. Christian trust rests on his cross and resurrection.

How should we view people of other religions?

People with different beliefs are neighbors with dignity, made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26–31). Confessing faith in Jesus is no reason to insult others. We can speak honestly about differences while listening and loving.

Why would a loving God judge?

This asks how love and justice belong together. Romans 2:5–8 speaks of God’s judgment of wrongdoing. The God who does not ignore injustice also shows love for sinners in Romans 5:6–8. The cross deserves careful attention rather than a quick dismissal of this tension.

Why are there suffering and evil?

Easy explanations can wound people who suffer. Romans 8:18–39 acknowledges groaning and waiting while speaking of the Spirit’s help and hope of restoration. It does not explain every individual tragedy. Listening, protection, and practical care are places to begin.

Are there reasons to believe the resurrection?

Questions are welcome. First Corinthians 15:3–8 reports Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection, and appearances. It is a central witness to the Christian claim, not a one-verse resolution of every historical debate. Begin by comparing it with the resurrection accounts in the Gospels.

Can I trust the Bible?

The Bible includes books from different periods and literary genres. Ask who is speaking, to whom, and in what context, rather than isolating a sentence. Try reading a whole Gospel, such as John, and keep your questions. Distinguish this page’s explanations from its Scripture quotations too.

Will faith make everything go well?

That is not a promise we can make. Romans 8 includes suffering and groaning. Verse 28 belongs with verse 29’s purpose of becoming like Christ. Faith involves trusting God and seeking help in hardship, not securing success.

What if a church has hurt me?

Your hurt should not be minimized, and you should not be rushed back into an unsafe setting. Hebrews 10:24–25 describes mutual encouragement in love and good works. Prioritize safety and recovery while taking time to look for an accountable community that respects questions.

What if I sin after believing?

Do not hide wrongdoing or dismiss it as harmless. Return in repentance and trust, take responsibility for harm, and seek help. Life by the Spirit in Galatians 5 is not an exam scoring a single day’s perfection.

Are faith and feelings the same?

Feelings matter, but they fluctuate. First John 5:11–13 locates life in God’s Son. On days with little joy, you can still ask questions, read Scripture, and rely on Christ. Emotional intensity is not a measure for judging someone’s faith.

May I ask questions before I feel certain?

Yes. You do not need to pretend to certainty or press a prayer button. Explore Jesus and his promise in John 5:24, and share the questions that remain. You can take your next step without being rushed.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Where would you like to begin?

Keep reading, bring a question, or find someone to learn with. You do not have to choose in a hurry.

Looking for a healthy community

Look for a community that explains Scripture in context, welcomes questions, cares for vulnerable people, and holds its leaders accountable. Pressure for money, secrecy about harm, or demands for unquestioning obedience are reasons to pause and seek outside help. Take time, especially if you have been hurt before.
